WRITER - historian - Jolanda di Monferrato

"L'imperatrice ribelle: Jolanda - Irene di Monferrato"
Urbs, silva et flumen, n°2, XIX (2006), pp.141-143

Giorgio Quintini was often attracted to the idea of powerful female characters in history (one of the subjects of his monologues for the theatre was the Empress Catherine of Russia). This is a short essay he published in Urbs, the local history journal of Ovada, in which he outlines the career of Jolanda of Monferrato, one of the daughters of the Marquis William (1180-1225), who, in some style, left her father in Piedmont to become the bride of the Emperor of Byzantium. Her son would become the ruler of her father's lands and the founder of the Paleologo di Monferrato family.
