BENITO "NITO" VICINI - "La piccinina" (1922-2003)
Nito Vicini, singer, dancer, painter, cabaret artiste, was born in Perugia in 1922 and thus nine years older than Giorgio and ready to show him around when he got there at the age of seventeen. Nito was small and liked to be called "la piccinina" and was quite open about his personal life. He never married. After his death Perugia organised a conference about him and there is a movement to have a street named after him.
Giorgio, who returned to Perugia from time to time, partly for business reasons as his father had left him a property there, used to see Nito and returned to Rome with amusing stories. On one of his last journeys there in 1989 Benito had given him an autographed painting of a large-eyed cat, in sub-Novella Parigini style, which Giorgio promptly gave away. Here it is.
